Sculpting Hollow Felt Forms with Lisa Klakulak: September 4th-8th, 2024

$895.00

Description: Sculpting Hollow Felt Forms: Applications of Partial Felt + New Adv Techniques with 3D Partial Felt.

Learn technique for layout/wrapping of various 2D resist template shapes in a consistent thinness of wool fiber while simultaneously integrating distinct areas of denser layout and partial felt shapes to explore differences of shrinkage as a means of sculpting surface relief and hollow form. In addition to raising form and varying the shrinkage of the form’s wall, applying perimetral fulling of the incorporated partial felt allows one to alter the surface to achieve deeply concave and protuberant curves while sculpting forms previously unimaginable. Participants will make partial felt in varying thicknesses and states of structural integrity to cut and apply in their fiber layout.

Students will focus on raising a form from a single 2-D plane, sculpting various hollow forms from a circular template, and expand possibilities through various template shapes while exploring 3-D partial felts! Proper fulling, the thickness of the vessel’s wall in relationship to its surface area and interior volume and the amount of and placement of denser areas of partial felt as structural support will determine the forms integrity. Hand stitched structural ribbing, steam blocking and shellac stiffening can then be applied to further refine the forms posture and presence.

Klakulak graduated in 1997 with a BFA in Fiber Arts from Colorado State University and in 2020, a MFA in Sculpture from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Exploring, making and teaching under the guise of STRONGFELT, Klakulak’s work has been recognized through American Craft Council and James Renwick Alliance Awards and publications, such as Fiber Arts, Surface Design Journal, Shuttle Spindle Dyepot, Fiber Art Now, American Craft and several international Felt Journals. Klakulak’s technical approaches to teaching wet felting has placed her workshops and more recently, online coursework, in demand worldwide from regional craft schools of the Southeastern US such as Penland and Arrowmont, to museums, guilds and private ateliers from Canada to Chile and Uruguay, from the UK to Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and France to Australia and New Zealand.

Klakulak communicates with a fiber-based language, a dialect using processes of material accretion and densification with a cadence focused on spacing, layering and agitating. Klakulak creates variances in tension, compaction and contortion inspired by analogies between the structures and forces of geology and sociology. Her works have ranged in format from carrying vessels, wearables and fine jewelry to wall work, figurative pieces and sculpture over the past 30 years. Travel has been and continues to be her ideation spring offering a sense of movement and broadening that counters the nature of her chosen media as well as fresh insights into the strata of both lands and societies that inhabit it.
