Description: Stories and myths invite us to explore meaning and build a sense of belonging. In this 4-day workshop, the class will explore the potential of narrative sculpture to build connection with our world. Follow Kirsten down the rabbit hole as she guides students in building a ¾ life size head using a coil method and sharing all of her hand building techniques. She will break down anatomy and proportion in an easy step-by-step approach with handouts that can be taken home for later reference.

Kirsten emphasizes individual attention to help each student achieve their artistic vision. She will then guide students to narratively embellish their head, emphasizing personal themes of kinship with the human and natural world. In addition, Kirsten will also problem solve with students to seamlessly incorporate mixed media after firing.

Clay will be available for purchase at the workshop. Contact Kirsten if you would like to bring your own.

Fee: $670. Fee includes the workshop, materials provided by the instructor, and a $20 non-refundable registration fee.

Firing: Bisque firing available. See options below. Pick up is encouraged due to the anticipated scale of sculptures.

Accommodations: Our “not so tiny” tiny home, The Casita, is located just steps from the teaching studio, this newly constructed home can accommodate 2 adults and has a full kitchen and bath. Additional accommodations can be found in the workshop guide here.

Cancellation policy: 100% refund if we can fill your spot. 50% refund if we cannot fill your spot. No refund for cancellations received less than 2 weeks from workshop date.

Kirsten Stingle’s narrative sculptures confront a globally connected world that heightens individual isolation and a superficial understanding of our place in the world. Her work focuses on the common threads of human experience, emphasizing our interconnectedness to the world around us. The primary protagonist in each sculpture is the hand-built porcelain figure, with special emphasis on the communication tools of gesture and expression. Through careful collaboration with antique relics and other media she transforms an intricate mixture of disparate techniques into a seamless narrative vision. Stingle has exhibited internationally in the following museums: HEY! CERAMIQUE.S at the Museum of La Halle Saint Pierre in Paris, France curated by Anne Richard, founder of HEY! modern art and pop culture; Museo a Cielo Aperto and Museo MACRO of Rome, Italy; Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art; Georgia Museum of Arts and Sciences; Harn Museum and Barton College of Art. Stingle has participated in international high-end exhibitions for more than ten years, including L.A. Art, SOFA, Art Miami: Aqua, Art New York, Art Wynwood, Art Palm Beach, and Art Palm Springs. Her work is found in the permanent collections of the Macon Museum of Arts and Sciences, the Kapp Foundation, the Addams Family Foundation, Cafesjian Foundation, and Windgate Center for Art and Design. Stingle has been highlighted by such publications as Hey! modern art and pop culture, Beautiful Bizarre, What Women Create, Hi-Fructose, and Art Doll Quarterly. She has been chosen as a sculpture finalist for the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Stingle has gained curatorial curated ”In.Visible” at The Bascom Center for Visual Arts and co curated: “Taboo: Sexuality and Sexual Identity in Ceramics;” “Sacred and Profane,” and; “Deconstructing the Conversation.
