Screen Printed Underglaze Transfers with Susan Feagin

  • Ideas of images or patterns to print. Before the class starts, please email Susan up to 3 JPEG’s of a black-and-white images that you would like to use with the mini EZScreens. I’ll print it out on a transparency in time for the workshop. Here is the website for EZScreens so you can get an idea of what we’re doing: www.ezscreenprint.com  Your drawing or image needs to be simple and with thick-ish lines to make a good screen. No pencil lines or shading. Consider drawing with a Sharpie or perhaps you might find some black and white clip art online that you like. Your image should be about the size of an index card, 3” x 5.” 

  • Pony roller

  • Plastic or rubber rib tools to use as small squeegees

  • Small throwing sponges

  • Pin tool

  • Spray bottle

  • Towel & Aprom 

  • Scissors 

  • Sketchbook or notebook. Pencil and pen

  • Small, thin watercolor or bamboo brushes for drawing with drawing fluid

  • Larger brushes for applying  slip (1-inch hake brush or chip brush from hardware store)

  • Thin plastic to cover work

  • Box and bubble wrap to transport finished work

  • Bagged lunch & water (coffee and lite snacks provided)

Optional

  • If you are able, please bring some small leatherhard clay slabs or tiles from home to experiment with using your transfers.

  • Slip trailers or plastic squeeze bottle/ underglaze applicators 

  • Cutting mat 

  • Xacto knife and blades

  • Newsprint pad

  • Hair dryer

  • Blue painters tape

  • Sharpie paint marker

  • Small wooden throwing tool

Susan Will Provide:

  • A couple of slabs for students to share

  • One silk screen for each student to use and take home with their drawing fluid image

  • Extra silk screens for sharing and demo purposes

  • Squeegees to share

  • Variety of underglazes for printing and drawing

  • Some underglaze applicators and slip trailers for students to try

  • Variety of colored slips to share

  • Newsprint sheets

  • Hinge boards

  • Extra transparencies

  • Sharpie paint markers and regular markers

  • Hair dryer

  • EZ Screens and items needed to expose them: LED exposure light in case of cloudy conditions outside; plastic bins for water; EZ Screen “exposure units;” clothesline and clothespins; blue painters tape

  • Rubylyth

  • Extra cutting mats

  • Extra X-actos

  • Drawing fluid and screen filler

  • Scoop coater

  • Screen filler remover 

  • Scrub brushes for cleaning screens
